Sewing

Gill was an excellent seamstress and when she was young she was an 'outworker' making and altering clothes for pocket money. She was taught by her mum, Laura, who was very good at sewing as well. Out of necessity she made a lot of clothes for Debbie and Tracey when they were younger. She even made a suit for Ian's best man, Paul, for their wedding in 1980. She quickly got a very good reputation and the commissions started to come in. When we were young (in the 1980s) the fashion was to have your jeans or trousers with no flares at all - almost ankle tight. Craig and I would get new trousers and then insist that Gill took them in as much as possible. This was combined with white towelling socks and slip-on shoes to complete the desired look! When Debbie and I were young she started to make toys for us and then also for children in the street as a way to make a bit of extra money. She did a nice line in Babapappas and also Wombles - Orinoco was her best seller! When Debbie was about 4 she made a very fetching daffodil style Easter bonnet for a competition at the local Conservative Club in Harpenden. Debbie won and got lots of Cadbury's Creme Eggs!
