Art

Gill was good at Art and had started to revive her skills by taking painting and drawing classes. When Debbie and I were young she often used to sit and paint and draw with us. With typical modesty she insisted that she could 'only draw horses' which we must have asked her to do over and over again so we could copy it. I remember her doing a painted egg with a ginger cat on it which Debbie and I thought was brilliant. More recently Gill had started to create her own cards. She had special papers, transfers, lettering etc. to create a unique card for friends and family. Although it isn't strictly art, Gill was very good at decorating. She liked to choose the wallpapers, match curtains and carpets to create the right feel for a room. She was very precise when hanging wallpaper and it always looked very professional once it had been hung. I remember her helping Grandpa hang the wallpaper at Southdown Road in the front room. It was a massive room, because it used to be the grocers shop, and it took ages. The paper was really heavy as it was a hessian covered paper. When it was done the cat (Misty? Smokey?) used to run up the wall and hang off it at the top - just out of reach. It used to run up the lining of the big velvet curtains as well which used to drive Grandpa mad!
