Driving

Gill passed her test third time but it was more about nerves under pressure than her actual driving skill. Her brother, David, is sure he must have teased her as he passed first time aged just 17. I'm sure she reminded him who passed their 11+! Her first car was a dark blue Morris 1100 (I think) although she wasn't too bothered about the make. I'm sure if you had asked her 'What was your first car? she would have said 'Blue'. She used to trundle up and down to Stratford to go and see Ian in it and she never drove on the motorway. I remember thinking that we weren't going very fast - about 45mph - but I suppose that was nearly it's top speed! We used to ask for the radio to be on and she would let us have it on for a bit. It got turned off when something like The Specials came on, which she thought 'was rubbish'. She was more of a David Soul, David Essex or Commodores kind of girl! Debbie remembered that Mum then got 'Ollie' Opel - an turquoise Opal Kadett - from some family friends, Sid and Betty Trendell. Betty was a glamourous woman with platinum blonde hair who smoked pink and green cigarettes with a cigarette holder. She used to tell us she was a witch like Elizabeth Montgomery in 'Bewitched'. I don't recall her driving the Marina when she married Ian. We used to pack ourselves into the car and drive for 3 hours down to South Wales. We stayed in the police club chalet in Kidwelly - or Babyboot as we kids renamed it! We had some great holidays down there and found the most fantastic beach nearby with sand dunes and wide white sand stretches. We then got 'Joanne' the Astra which was a lovely little car that Ian got second hand - but had hardly any miles on the clock. I'm sure Mum must have driven it but I don't really remember her doing so. I remember Mum and Ian had a pale blue Rover and Grandpa's Fiesta and when Ian retired they got the Rover 216 cabriolet 'before they were so old they looked silly in it' said Gill. In recent times they have had two Clios and Mum really liked them. She was always nipping about to bowls matches all over the place and picking up friends to make sure they could get there easily.
