Holidays

Mum used to really enjoy her holidays but when you have four kids it is expensive to go away. We had some brilliant holidays in Kidwelly, near Carmarthen for a few years. We stayed in the Police Club chalet. When Craig and I were about 15 we went as a family to Normandy, France. We went with Key Camps who set up tents ready for you when you arrive. Mum was delighted to see a proper camping kitchen all set out and we had a brilliant time. We had baguettes, brie and even a small bottle of french beer in the evenings. We visited nearby Pegasus Bridge and saw where the gliders landed and the first building to be liberated in France. In later years Gill and Ian were fortunate to be able to go on a few cruises. Mum really enjoyed being on the ship, the food, etiquette, ambience and entertainment. They went round the Med a couple of times, to the Caribbean and also to Norway. Gill and Ian went to Cuba, which was a real eye opener for her. The country was beautiful but she was shocked by how poor the people were. Her last holiday was with David and Rita to Scotland. For many years they had talked about going away together again and finally they were able to arrange it. They had a lovely time and really loved Scotland. There were plans to return there later this year. They said it reminded them of New Zealand. Gill and Ian were planning to go to Africa in 2007 but when I announced that Alison and I were going to get married where we met - in Sydney, Australia - that was shelved. Gill and Ian planned a big trip to take in Australia and New Zealand. They spent a week in Manly and it was a lovely time for everyone. Gill and Ian were so impressed with Manly, Sydney and Australia in general that they had it in mind to return in the next couple of years. They even have a photo of Manly promenade in their house. They went on to New Zealand and drove around the islands following a lot of advice on where to go and what to see from Ian's Kiwi friend, Gary. They had a great time and it was a very memorable trip for all sorts of reasons.
